VAT reclaim and business expenses

Get a VAT receipt

Request at the booth on the day, apply via the m6toll.co.uk online receipt portal, or use a Breeze account where every transaction is itemised with VAT automatically.

Claim against business profits

Toll charges incurred on business journeys are an allowable expense. Keep dated receipts and reference the journey purpose for HMRC. Self-employed drivers and limited companies both qualify.

Employee reimbursement

Employees paying out of pocket for business use can usually reclaim through expenses or claim tax relief via HMRC for unreimbursed costs. Standard records-keeping rules apply.

This is general guidance, not tax advice. Confirm with your accountant or HMRC before relying on a specific approach.

Fleet ROI example

20-van regional fleet

Scenario: 20 vans (Class 3), 5 round trips per week each, full 3-zone route, 48 weeks per year.

  • Trips per van per year: 240
  • Total annual trips: 4,800
  • Standard contactless: 4,800 × £16.50 = £79,200
  • Breeze account: 4,800 × £14.10 = £67,680
  • Annual saving from Breeze: £11,520

That is before factoring in driver time saved at the plaza, reduced no-payment penalty risk and consolidated VAT receipts. For most multi-vehicle operators, fleet Breeze is a clear win.

Commercial FAQ

Can I reclaim VAT on M6 Toll charges?
Yes, if you are VAT registered and the journey is for business. Toll charges include VAT. For one-off contactless trips, request a VAT receipt at the booth or via the m6toll.co.uk receipt portal. Breeze account holders see VAT-itemised invoices in the online portal automatically.
Which fuel cards work at the M6 Toll?
Most major UK fleet fuel cards (Shell Fleet, BP Plus, Allstar, Fuel Genie) are accepted at the contactless lanes alongside standard debit and credit cards. Always test your specific card on the first trip and keep a backup payment method to hand.
Is there a fleet account option?
Yes. Breeze offers a business variant with consolidated invoicing, multiple vehicle assignment under one account and management portal access. Suitable for fleets of any size, from a single van up to multi-vehicle operations.
How is van height measured?
Height is measured at the front axle. The classification breakpoint is 1.3m. Most car-derived vans (Caddy, Berlingo, Combo) are Class 2. Standard panel vans (Transit, Sprinter, Crafter) are Class 3 (or Class 4 if over 3.5t MAM). When in doubt, the system uses the highest applicable class.
What about abnormal loads?
Abnormal indivisible loads, oversized vehicles and convoys outside the standard Class 1 to 5 framework need pre-arranged pricing with MEL. Rates start around £39 and rise depending on size, axle count and escort needs. Bookings should be made in advance.
