How to pay the M6 Toll

What to expect at the plaza, every payment method that works and which account suits your usage. Cash is no longer accepted.

Quick answer

Card only. Tap a contactless card or device at the barrier, insert a chip and PIN card, or set up a free Breeze or Lite account so the toll is taken automatically with no stopping.

The four ways to pay

Most popular

Contactless card

Tap any UK or international contactless debit or credit card on the barrier reader. No daily limit applies as the toll is below the contactless cap.

Universal

Chip and PIN

Insert your card and enter your PIN at the booth. Useful if a contactless tap fails or your card is non-contactless.

Smart accounts

Breeze (discounted)

Pre-paid ANPR account. Up to 65% off in some categories. Drive through a dedicated Breeze lane without stopping.

Smart accounts

Lite (no discount)

Free ANPR account at the standard rate. No stopping, no top-up balance to manage. Launched late 2025.

What to expect at the plaza

  1. Slow to 30 mph as you approach. Variable signs warn well in advance.
  2. Pick your lane. Look for the symbols above each booth. Card and contactless lanes have a card icon. Breeze and Lite lanes show an ANPR camera icon and need no stopping.
  3. Stop at the barrier if paying. Tap or insert. Wait for the green arrow.
  4. Drive on. The barrier lifts within 1 to 2 seconds of a successful read.

Plaza staff are present to help. If anything goes wrong they can settle the trip manually so you can move on.

If something goes wrong

Card declined

Try again with another card, or use the help button. Staff can take details and you settle later, no penalty if resolved promptly.

You drove through unexpectedly

Pay the missed toll online within the grace window listed on m6toll.co.uk. See our penalties guide for the full process.

Need a VAT receipt

Request at the booth or via the official receipt portal. Breeze users get receipts automatically in the account portal.

Payment FAQ

Can I pay the M6 Toll with cash?
No. Cash was abolished in May 2024. Every lane now requires either contactless payment, a chip and PIN card or an ANPR account (Breeze or Lite). Stickers at every approach make this clear, but many drivers still arrive expecting to use cash.
Does the M6 Toll accept Apple Pay or Google Pay?
Smartphone contactless payment via Apple Pay and Google Pay is supported at most contactless lanes, the same way you would use a wearable for the Tube. If your device or card has not been read after two attempts, switch to a physical card to be sure.
What if my card is declined at the barrier?
Don't panic. Pull forward, follow plaza staff guidance and use the help button at the booth. Staff can take an alternative card or take your details so the toll can be settled within the grace window without a penalty.
Can I get a VAT receipt for business?
Yes. Breeze account holders see every transaction in their online portal with VAT details. For one-off contactless trips, request a receipt at the booth or apply online via m6toll.co.uk with the date, time and direction of travel.
How long does account setup take?
Lite is instant: register your number plate online and you can use the account on the same journey. Breeze takes a few minutes to set up and requires a top-up payment, which is then drawn down each time you travel. Both are free to register.
