How much is the M6 Toll? (cost and charges)

A car making the full M6 J3a to M6 J11a run pays £12.00 contactless or £10.20 with a Breeze account. Other vehicles pay £5.90 to £20.90 for the full route; shorter one and two-zone trips cost less.

M6 Toll prices rose on 7 July 2026. The full-route car rate went from £11.60 to £12.00 contactless, and from £9.80 to £10.20 with a Breeze account.

The tables above reflect Midland Expressway Limited's most recent quarterly tariff, effective 7 July 2026. The full-route car rate rose 40p to £12.00 contactless (£10.20 Breeze); one-zone Breeze rates were unchanged. The previous rate was £11.60 contactless (£9.80 Breeze), in place from April 2026.

Vehicle classification guide

Many drivers do not know which class applies. The operator sets it from three things: the number of wheels, the number of axles and the height at the first axle, measured from the ground to the top of the vehicle along a vertical line through the centre of the front wheels. There is no weight rule and nothing is taken from the V5C.

Motorcycle

2 or fewer wheels

Examples: Motorcycles, mopeds, scooters

4 or more wheels, 2 axles, under 1.3 m at the first axle

Examples: Cars, SUVs and car-derived small vans (Berlingo, Caddy, Transit Connect class) that measure under 1.3 m at the front axle

Heavy and abnormal loads

Vehicles outside the standard Class 1 to 5 system (notably abnormal indivisible loads, escort vehicles and oversized cargo) attract bespoke pricing set on application, which can run to several hundred pounds for the largest convoys. The operator does not publish these rates; bookings must be made in advance with MEL on 0330 660 0790.

What are the M6 Toll prices in 2026?

Since 7 July 2026 a car (Class 2) pays £12.00 contactless for the full three-zone route, or £10.20 with a Breeze account. Two zones cost £9.50 (£8.40 Breeze) and one zone £6.90 (£4.00 Breeze). Motorcycles pay £5.90 for the full route and the largest HGVs £20.90. This replaced the previous £11.60 car rate that applied from April 2026.

How much does the M6 Toll cost?

For most drivers the M6 Toll costs £12.00 in a car for the full three-zone route at the contactless rate, or £10.20 with a free Breeze account. Shorter trips cost less: two zones are £9.50 (£8.40 Breeze) and one zone £6.90 (£4.00 Breeze). Across all vehicle classes the full-route standard charge runs from £5.90 for a motorcycle to £20.90 for the largest HGV. These rates have applied since 7 July 2026.

What are the M6 Toll charges by vehicle?

Full-route (three-zone) contactless charges are: motorcycle £5.90, car £12.00, car towing a trailer or caravan £16.90, van, minibus, motorhome or 2-axle HGV or coach £20.20, and HGV or coach with 3 to 6 axles £20.90. A Breeze account cuts each of these, with the car rate dropping to £10.20. One and two-zone journeys are charged proportionally less. All charges include VAT.

Why are there three pricing tiers?

Standard contactless is the price you pay if you tap a card or device at the barrier. Breeze is a pre-paid account that uses ANPR and gives a discount of around 10 to 50% depending on vehicle class and zone count. Lite is a free ANPR account that lets you pass without stopping but charges the standard contactless rate. Pick Lite for convenience, Breeze for savings, contactless for occasional use.

How do I know if my van is Class 2 or Class 4?

Class is set by axles and height at the front axle; weight is not part of the rule. Two axles and under 1.3m at the front axle is Class 2 (cars and car-derived small vans such as a Berlingo or Caddy). Two axles and 1.3m or over is Class 4 (Transit, Sprinter, Crafter and Vivaro-class panel vans, minibuses, motorhomes, 2-axle lorries and coaches). Class 3 is a car under 1.3m towing a trailer, so a van on its own is never Class 3; a van towing a trailer is Class 5. The barrier measures the height, it is not declared.

When do prices change?

MEL reviews tariffs roughly every quarter. The most recent change took effect on 7 July 2026, when the full-route car rate rose from £11.60 to £12.00 contactless (£9.80 to £10.20 on Breeze). The current tables are published on this page. Increases over the past two decades have outpaced inflation, with the car rate rising from £2 in 2003 to £12.00 today.

Are prices the same in both directions?

Yes. The same zone pricing applies whether you are heading north or south. The toll plazas sit between T3 and T4 (southbound) and between T6 and T7 (northbound).

Is VAT included in the price?

Is there a discount for Blue Badge holders?

Not for the badge itself: Midland Expressway's position is that the Blue Badge scheme does not identify who qualifies for toll exemption, so a Blue Badge alone does not reduce the price. What does exist is the Mobility Exemption Pass, which gives free passage for one registered vehicle. You qualify if you receive the disabled vehicle tax class, the higher rate mobility component of DLA, the enhanced rate mobility component of PIP, the war pensioner mobility supplement, Armed Forces Independence Payment, or the Scottish equivalents. Apply online through the M6toll customer portal with evidence of the benefit: there is a £7 administration charge, it lasts one year before renewal, and it covers only the vehicle named on the application with the applicant travelling in it. Cameras recognise the plate, so there is no card to carry. Answer added after a reader question, September 2026.
