Hire van M6 Toll cost

Almost every UK hire van is Class 4 on the M6 Toll: £20.20 contactless or £17.60 Breeze for the full route in 2026. A 7.5-tonne box truck is the same class and the same price, because the class is set by axles and height at the front axle, not weight. Only a car-derived small van (Berlingo, Caddy, Transit Connect class) drops to the £12.00 car rate.

Class by hire size

Verified September 2026 against m6toll.co.uk pricing. Class is set by axle count and height at the front axle, measured automatically at the barrier; weight does not come into it, so a 3.5-tonne Luton and a 7.5-tonne box truck pay the same.

Pay the right way to avoid hire-company admin fees

The biggest hire-van toll mistake is driving through without paying. Left unpaid for 6 days, the Payment Notice picks up additional charges of at least £70 and lands with the hire company via debt recovery, who recharge you with a tacked-on admin fee. Three ways to avoid it:

  • Contactless at the barrier. Easiest for a one-off. Stop, tap, drive. Receipt printed.
  • Pay online within 6 days. customers.m6toll.co.uk/payment-notice lets you pay by registration after travel, before any additional charges are added.
  • Free Lite account. ANPR auto-bills your registered card. No stopping, no admin fee risk.

For a hire van the free Lite account is the lowest-friction setup. Sign up at m6toll.co.uk before pickup with the hire van registration. Account closes the loop on billing whether you tap or not.

Hire van M6 Toll FAQ

What class is a hire van on the M6 Toll?
Almost all hire vans are Class 4 (£20.20 contactless or £17.60 Breeze for the full route). Class 4 is any vehicle with two axles that measures 1.3 metres or over at the front axle, which covers the Transit, Sprinter, Crafter, Boxer, Master and Luton box vans on every major rental fleet (Enterprise, Hertz, Sixt, Europcar). Weight is not part of the rule. The only hire vans that pay the £12.00 car rate (Class 2) are car-derived small vans such as a Berlingo, Caddy or Transit Connect that measure under 1.3 metres at the front axle.
Are 7.5-tonne hire vans a higher class?
No. A 7.5-tonne box truck has two axles and is over 1.3 metres at the front axle, so it is Class 4, exactly the same as a 3.5-tonne Luton: £20.20 contactless full route, or £17.60 on Breeze. The M6 Toll has no weight threshold. The class only rises to Class 5 (£20.90) when there are more than two axles, for example a hire van towing a trailer.
Who pays the M6 Toll on a hire van, me or the hire company?
You. Hire companies do not include toll costs in the rental. Pay contactless at the barrier, or set up a Lite account (free ANPR billing) before pickup. The Breeze discount account is overkill for a one-off hire but useful if you do regular hire-van runs.
Will the hire company charge me admin fees if I do not pay?
Usually. If you drive through without paying, the operator raises a Payment Notice against the van's registration. Unpaid after 6 days, additional charges of at least £70 are added and the notice is passed to a debt recovery agency, which pursues the keeper: the hire company. Hire companies then recharge you and typically add an admin fee of £15 to £40 on top. Pay at the barrier, or pay the Payment Notice yourself within 6 days at customers.m6toll.co.uk/payment-notice, to avoid this.
Can I claim the M6 Toll on business expenses?
Yes. The M6 Toll is a deductible business expense for hire vans used for work. The receipt or Breeze account statement is sufficient documentation. The toll is VAT inclusive at 20%, recoverable on a VAT return for VAT-registered businesses.
