M6 Toll on Christmas Day and New Year
Open 24 / 7 / 365, same flat £11.60 car tariff. Christmas Day daytime is the quietest the M6 ever gets, so the toll has little to save. Boxing Day evening and New Year return are the peak-value festive windows.

One unusual case: emergency-services charity charity drive
Note: emergency-services vehicles on emergency calls do not pay the toll. Charity convoys and Christmas Day blue-light visits use the toll free of charge. Civilian drivers pay the standard rate.
If you are travelling to a hospital visit on Christmas Day for a family emergency, the free M6 is fast and free. The toll is rarely the right call for civilian Christmas Day travel unless you have a tight onwards deadline.
Christmas / New Year M6 Toll FAQ
Is the M6 Toll open on Christmas Day?
Yes. The road operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The published flat tariff applies. A car pays £11.60 contactless or £9.80 on a Breeze account, the same as any other day.
Is the M6 Toll worth paying on Christmas Day?
Usually no. The free M6 through Birmingham is extremely quiet on Christmas Day daytime, so the toll typically saves under 5 minutes. The road stays open mainly for emergency-services, hauliers, hospitality staff and Christmas-evening returnees.
What about Boxing Day?
Boxing Day morning is quieter than a normal Saturday. Boxing Day afternoon picks up as retail-park traffic builds. The toll saves moderate time (10 to 25 min) on the late Boxing Day return window. Cost unchanged at £11.60.
What about New Year's Eve and New Year's Day?
New Year's Eve evening traffic is mixed. New Year's Day morning is quiet. New Year's Day evening picks up as people return from family visits. The toll typically saves 15 to 35 minutes on the late New Year's Day return.
Are Norton Canes services open over Christmas?
The forecourt and core services stay open. Individual outlets (Costa, M&S Food, KFC) may shorten hours on Christmas Day itself. Forecourt fuel and rapid EV chargers operate normally. Check the operator website or the services page on the day for outlet hours.
Is there any chance the road closes for snow?
Yes, in severe winter weather the toll can close, like any motorway. MEL operates active gritting and snow ploughs throughout the winter and closures are typically short. Check Highways England live traffic for the M6 Toll status before travelling in heavy snow.
