Missed M6 Toll payment
If you drove through the M6 Toll without paying, the operator raises a Payment Notice against your registration. You have 6 days from the date the trip was validated to pay the toll online at the normal price. After that, additional charges of at least £70 are added and the notice is passed to a debt recovery agency. Below: the recovery process, the 6-day window in practice, common reasons it happens, and how to appeal.
Go to customers.m6toll.co.uk/payment-notice and pay the trip against your registration within 6 days. The trip appears a few hours after travel and can take up to 48 hours to be uploaded. Pay the plain toll and nothing else is added. If you cannot see it, call 0330 660 0790 (Monday to Friday 08:30 to 17:00).

Step-by-step: how to settle a missed M6 Toll
- Open the Payment Notice portal at customers.m6toll.co.uk/payment-notice. If you pressed Call for Assistance at the lane and the operator texted you a link, that goes to the same place.
- Enter the registration that drove through, not a different vehicle.
- Wait for the trip to appear if it is not there yet. The operator says trips show a few hours after travel and can take up to 48 hours to be uploaded. The 6-day clock runs from the date the trip was validated, not from the moment you look.
- Pay the toll amount (£12.00 for a car full route, or the partial-journey rate if applicable). Within the 6 days it is the toll only. The operator does not list any extra fee for paying this way.
- Keep the confirmation. Save the receipt or screenshot the portal confirmation so you can show it if a debt recovery letter turns up later in error.
The whole process takes 2 to 5 minutes once the trip is showing. If it has been more than 48 hours and nothing appears, call Customer Services rather than assuming you are in the clear.
How long do I have? The 6-day window in practice
The operator publishes a hard deadline: payment needs to be made within 6 days following the date when your trip was validated. Put against a real trip it looks like this:
- Day of travel: the trip is captured at the lane. It is not yet visible online.
- A few hours to 48 hours later: the trip is uploaded and validated. It now shows against your registration in the portal, and the 6-day clock is running.
- Within 6 days of validation: pay the toll online or by phone and nothing further is added. This is also the only window in which you can appeal.
- After 6 days: additional charges of at least £70 are added to the notice. There is no published reduced rate for paying soon afterwards.
- Still unpaid: the notice is passed to a third-party debt recovery agency.
Treat the window as "deal with it now, today". Waiting to see whether a letter arrives is the expensive route, because the operator does not describe posting anything before the 6 days run out.
Why this happens (and how to stop it next time)
You thought cash was still accepted
Cash was abolished in May 2024. Old signage and word-of-mouth still suggest otherwise. Fix: always carry a contactless card or have Apple Pay / Google Pay set up. The lanes also take fuel cards.
Your card declined and you drove on
The operator's instruction is to press the Call for Assistance button at the payment point; it will issue you a Payment Notice to pay online within 6 days. If you drove on under pressure (or because the barrier raised anyway), pay online today. Fix: carry a second card, and use the button rather than driving through.
Used a Breeze lane without an active account
ANPR captures you but there is no account to debit. Fix: if you do not have a Breeze account, always use the contactless or card-reader lanes, not the dedicated Breeze ANPR lanes.
Breeze auto-top-up failed
Expired card or insufficient balance on the linked account. Fix: keep your Breeze payment details current. Enable email alerts in the portal for failed top-ups.
ANPR plate-read failed
Dirty plate, mud, snow, very close-following vehicle, occasionally happens. Fix: keep your plate clean. If your Lite account did not register a recent trip, log in and verify.
If you paid but a notice or a debt recovery letter still turns up
Payments can take a little while to reconcile against the trip record. If a Payment Notice is still showing, or a debt recovery letter arrives, even though you paid, do not panic.
- Find your payment confirmation (receipt from the lane, portal confirmation, or the line on your card statement).
- Call Customer Services on 0330 660 0790 (Monday to Friday 08:30 to 17:00). The operator handles appeals through this team, and the appeal window is 6 days from the date the trip was validated, so call as soon as you notice.
- Give the registration, the date of travel and the payment reference. Ask for confirmation that the notice has been closed.
- Keep a note of the call (date, time, name) alongside the confirmation in case the debt recovery agency writes again.
See the Payment Notice page for the full process.
Cost comparison: pay now vs let it run
| Action | Total cost (Class 2 car full route) |
|---|---|
| Pay online within 6 days of the trip being validated | £12.00 |
| Pay after the 6 days | £12.00 toll plus additional charges of at least £70 = at least £82.00 |
| Ignore the Payment Notice | At least £82.00, passed to a third-party debt recovery agency |
Always pay promptly. The fastest path is the cheapest path by a wide margin. Payment Notice terms verified against m6toll.co.uk on 1 September 2026.
