The Sutton-to-Cannock free alternative
The realistic free option is A5127 north through Mile Oak and Lichfield, then A5 west to Norton Canes. Around 18 miles. Off-peak it runs in 30 minutes; rush hour and school-run mornings push it to 45 to 55 minutes through Lichfield. The toll covers the same ground in 14 to 16 minutes with no traffic-light interaction.
For a commuter doing 220 days a year, taking the free route adds around 20 to 35 minutes per crossing, or 150 to 250 hours over the year. At any reasonable hourly opportunity cost, the toll is the lower total-cost option.
