T2 versus T1 for full-route trips

Choose by where you are coming from, not by cost. The toll is identical from T1 or T2 to T8.

  • Use T1 if you are arriving from the M42 (J9), the NEC, Birmingham Airport or the A446 from the south.
  • Use T2 if you are in Sutton Coldfield, Curdworth, or already on the A446 north of Coleshill. Saves 4 to 6 miles of M42 / A446 approach.
  • Cost is the same. Both bill at the 3-zone rate (£11.60 car contactless).

T2 to T8 FAQ

How much is T2 to T8 on the M6 Toll?
T2 to T8 is a full 3-zone journey because it crosses Zone 1 (T2), Zone 2, and Zone 3 (T8). A car pays £11.60 contactless or £9.80 with a Breeze account. Same rate as the full-route T1-to-T8 journey.
Why does T2 to T8 cost the same as T1 to T8?
Zone pricing caps at the full 3-zone rate. T1 and T2 both sit inside Zone 1, and T8 sits inside Zone 3. So any journey from T1 or T2 to T8 covers all 3 zones and bills at the maximum. Entering at T2 instead of T1 does not save money, only mileage.
Is there any cost benefit to using T2 instead of T1?
On a T-to-T8 journey no, the toll is identical at £11.60. The benefit is geographic. If you live in Sutton Coldfield or Curdworth, T2 saves 4 to 6 miles of M42 approach driving versus going round to T1 via M42 J9.
How long does T2 to T8 take?
Around 22 to 25 minutes on the toll at the 70 mph limit, plus 60 to 90 seconds at the northbound plaza between T6 and T7. From M6 J11a the road then reconnects to the free M6 northbound for Stafford and beyond.
What is the commuter alternative if I refuse the toll?
The free alternative is A5127 north through Lichfield, A5 west to Cannock, then A460 / A34 north to Stafford. Around 25 miles versus 22 on the toll, but typically 50 to 70 minutes door-to-door versus 22 to 25 on the toll. The toll saves 25 to 45 minutes each way, which adds up to 90 to 160 hours a year for a daily commuter.
